Bengawan Solo

Visit to Singapore Bengawan Solo

Most people are familiar with the story of how an Indonesian housewife made and sold such lovely cakes and kueh from her HDB flat that led to a knock by the authorities. That was how Ms Tjendri Anastasia started her shop in 1979. Today Bengawan Solo has about 38 shops island wide, including Changi Airport Terminal 1, 2 and 3. Production now comes from a centralised kitchen in Woodlands.

You can find a wide selection of kueh such as getuk ubi, lapis sagu, ondeh ondeh, etc. Gift boxes of pineapple tarts and other local cookies are available all year round. Bengawan Solo vouchers are a popular gift for friends when parents celebrate their baby’s 1st month.

The pandan cake (chiffon cake) is a bestseller. Pandan leaves or screw pine gives the natural colour and fragrance to this very popular cake. It is soft and not oily. Hong Kong tourists find the green coloured cake a novelty and lug home boxes of pandan cake from the airport shops.
